Each year, the junior class’ service learning project focuses on feeding the homeless.  Students are assigned the project in their English classes.

The project for the past five years has been the creation of an MRE (Meal Ready to Eat), an adaptation of the U.S. military’s field ration.

Mr. Arber used to assign a similar project as part of an English class, War Novels. When it came time to find a new service learning project for the junior class, it seemed like a natural fit.

Each student creates an MRE that fits inside of a one gallon zip-lock bag. Each MRE contains at least one entre for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Students also include snacks, sides, and utensils.

The MREs are donated to Homeful, one of Dayton’s homeless shelters. This year, thanks to Miss Hilty, Mrs. Schlangen, and Mr. Arber’s English classes, over 130 Meals Ready to Eat were donated to Homeful.
